Grgeteg monastery

Grgeteg Monastery (virtual tour of Fruška Gora monasteries)

Founder: according to some sources Zmaj Ognjeni Vuk, according to others Grgur Branković

The church is dedicated to the Transfer of the relics of St. Father Nikolaj (May 9/22)

Years of destruction: between 1766 and 1777, the monastery was abolished by court decree, and the monks were displaced; in the Second World War, the bell tower and lodgings were partially destroyed, and the archive and the treasury were completely destroyed.

Years of renovation: the church was renovated in 1691-1722; 1863; 1899-1901, 1953; partially restored church and lodgings in 1964; 1987, 1992, 2000 and 2013.

Architecture: the baroqueization of the monastery began with the construction of the north and west wings of the dormitory in 1751, the east wing in 1760 and the new church in 1766-1771.

Iconostasis: new, in the new church, painted by Jakov Orfelin in 1774-1775; it was demolished in 1899-1901. and replaced by Bole’s iconostasis painted by Uroš Predić in 1901-1902.

Painting/frescoes: 1829, work of painter Georgije Bakalović and goldsmith Dimitrije Đurković

Treasury: in the Second World War, the archive was completely destroyed, and the valuables were stolen and scattered

Holy relics: parts of the relics of the Holy great martyrs Haralampije and Pantelejmon

Today: the complex consists of a church, lodgings on all four sides and economic buildings.
