Petkovica Monastery

Petkovica Monastery (virtual tour of Fruška Gora monasteries)

Time of construction: according to tradition, the Petkovica monastery was founded in the first quarter of the 16th century.

Founder: according to testimony, Jelena Štiljanović, widow of despot Stefan Štiljanović.

The church is dedicated to St. Petka (October 14/27)

Years of destruction: in the Second World War, the church suffered and the iconostasis was destroyed.

Years of renovation: the first renovation was recorded in 1884. The renovation of the church, which lasted until the Second World War, began in 1927. The limestone coating was removed from the walls of the altar apse in 1950, and in 1952, the lime was removed from the friezes in the nave. Since 1981, continuous renovation has been going on.

Architecture: Petkovica church is an interesting example of a variant of Moravian architecture. A possible model is the Lazarica church.

Iconostasis: it was cut in 1735. Died in the Second World War, only the carved cross was preserved.

Painting/frescoes: the painting of the church was completed in 1588. The narthex is not colorful.

Today: the monastery complex consists of a church and a new inn, recently built on the site of the old southern inn. The Petkovica Monastery can be visited if you visit the virtual tour of Fruška Gora monasteries, on the page of our internet portal.
