Šišatovac Monastery
Šišatovac Monastery (virtual tour of Fruška Gora monasteries)
Time of construction: 1520 on the site of the small church of St. Nicholas
Founder: abbot of the Žiča monastery Teofil and monks Hilarion and Visarion
First written mention: 1540. Turks gave the permission for the repair of several monastery cells.
The church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin (September 8/21).
Years of destruction: the Šišatovac monastery did not suffer under the Turks. The church was demolished in 1778, and in 1849 the eastern wing of the inn was destroyed in an arson fire. In the Second World War it was looted, burned and destroyed; the wall paintings and the brick iconostasis also suffered.
Years of restoration: construction of lodgings, minor repairs to the church and construction of economic facilities during the 16th century. Then the church was colorful. Renewal in 1616-1693. Between 1738 and 1742, a belfry shaped under the influence of the Russian Baroque was added. It has a chapel dedicated to Saint George. The floor on the southern wing of the inn dates from 1807, and the floor above the western one from the end of the 19th century. The new large church was built in 1778. Minor works in 1970–1971. and 1989-1992. The comprehensive renovation was carried out under the direction of His Grace the Bishop of Srem, Mr. Vasilije.
Architecture: heavily influenced by traditional Serbian architecture with an attached baroque bell tower.
Iconostasis: it is assumed that it was created in 1778, when the church was. He painted icons in 1793–1795. Grigorije Davidović Obšić. He died completely in 1944, and the imperial doors with icons attributed to Dimitrije Bačević are kept in the Matica Srpska Gallery in Novi Sad.
Painting/frescoes: as well as the iconostasis and wall paintings were the work of Grigorije Davidović Obšić
Holy relics: the relics of Saint Stefan Štiljanović were kept until the Second World War
Today: from the complex that was the monastery until the Second World War (the church, on three sides of the storey lodgings and accompanying economic facilities), there is now a church and completely renovated lodgings.
