Jazak Monastery

Jazak Monastery (virtual tour of Fruška Gora monasteries)

Time of construction: according to tradition, the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century.

Founder: according to testimony, despot Jovan Branković, younger son of despot Angelina and despot Stefan.

The church is dedicated to the Descent of the Holy Spirit (50th day after Easter – Pentecost, Ghosts).

The first written data: Manuscript Triod of the Kyiv Library, 1522.

Years of destruction: in 1773, by decree of Maria Theresa, the old monastery of Jazak was displaced and, left to the ravages of time, turned into a ruin. The new Jazak monastery was destroyed by fire and destruction in 1942-1945.

Years of restoration: 1736. construction of a new church and spacious lodgings. The south wing of the inn, the bell tower and the temple dome were built in 1759–1805. The first major renovation took place in 1846, then in 1926–1930. and the last modern reconstruction after the destruction in the Second World War.

Architecture: the baroqueization of the monastery complex was achieved with the construction of a high bell tower along the western wall of the traditionally designed body of the church building.

Iconostasis: the baroque iconostasis for the new church was made in 1759–1769, and the icons for it were painted by Dimitrije Bačević. The imperial doors and the cross from the old iconostasis, most likely made in 1522, were moved to Novi Jazak.

Painting/frescoes: the church of old Jasko was painted; the church of new Jaska was whitewashed until 1899, when Pavle Čortanović painted oil wall paintings.

Holy relics: since 1705, the monastery has housed the relics of the Holy Emperor Uroš, the last Serbian ruler from the Nemanjić dynasty.

Today: the monastery complex consists of a church with a bell tower, three-sided lodgings and a high fence wall that closes the monastery gate, north of the monastery are the remains of the old Jasko, which was dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin (November 21/December 4). Today:  Jazak is a women’s monastery, headed by Abbess Paraskeva (Drapšin).

Patron’s Day of Jazak monastery is the Spirits (Trinity) – 50th day after Easter.
