Vrdnik Monastery - Ravanica

Vrdnik Monastery - Ravanica (virtual tour of Fruška Gora monasteries)

Time of construction: according to testimony, before 1521.

Founder: according to testimony, the Vrdnik monastery was founded by Metropolitan Serafim of Srem from the pre-Turkish period.

The church is dedicated to the feast of the Ascension of Christ (40th day after Easter).

Years of destruction: in the earthquake of 1893, in the Second World War. The old church was demolished in 1813, as it was small and unsuitable because the new one was built in 1811.

Years of restoration: roof repair 1600–1601; 1697, when it was settled by the monks of the Ravanica monastery in Serbia; 1885 and again in 1898, after the 1893 earthquake and the last reconstruction in 1987–1990.

Iconostasis: from 1743, the work of the Zograf Stanoje Popović; the iconostasis for the new church worked in 1809–1814. woodcarver Marko Vujatović. The icons on the iconostasis are the work of Dimitrije Avramović from 1851-1853.

Paintings/frescoes: in the monastery refectory, a work by Amvrosije Janković from 1771–1776, now destroyed.

Holy relics: the relics of Saint Knez Lazar were kept in the monastery until the Second World War, then they were transferred to the Cathedral Church in Belgrade, and from there they were returned to the Serbian Ravanica in 1990.

Today: the complex consists of a church, three wings of the inn and a wall on the eastern side that closes the monastery gate.
