Mala Remeta Monastery

Mala Remeta Monastery (virtual tour of Fruška Gora monasteries)

Construction time: no reliable data.

Founder: according to testimony, Serbian king Dragutin on the ruins of an older church.

The church is dedicated to the Feast of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary (October 1/14).

The first written mention: in 1541 as Remeta, and as Remetica in the cadastral register from 1545–48. years.

Years of destruction: the Mala Remeta monastery was not destroyed; even in the Second World War, the church was not damaged, but the inn was burned down.

Years of restoration: the construction of the present church (quite possibly the third in order) began in 1739. The inn was built in 1758 on the site of the old one. The first renovation in 1879 (the roof covering was changed) and the second in 1909–1910, when the interior of the church was painted. In 1896, only the southern lodge was rebuilt. After the Second World War, the inn was rebuilt.

Architecture: based on the old Serbian medieval architecture. Baroque influence bypassed this building almost completely.

Iconostasis: built in 1757, painted by Janko Halkozović in 1757–1759. The four throne icons are extremely valuable. The painters of the upper zone of the iconostasis are unknown. The annunciations on the imperial doors, side doors and medallions above them were made by Kosta Vanđelović in 1916.

Paintings/frescoes: the interior of the church is partially covered with wall paintings made by Kosta Vanđelović in 1909–1910.

Holy relics: Today, the monastery owns a piece of the relics of Saint George Kratovac, a Serb from Kratovo, a silversmith by trade, which was discovered not so long ago. He refused to convert to Islam, so the Turks burned him in Sofia.

Today: the monastery complex consists of the church and the southern wing of the inn, the appearance is the same as in the 18th century. It can be visited in detail if you visit the virtual tour of the Fruška Gora monasteries at the bottom of the page of our internet portal.

Today, the Mala Remeta monastery is a women’s monastery, and the abbess is: Nun Fevronija Jovanović).
