Time of construction: in June 1892, according to the project of the architect Vladimir Nikolić, the construction of this magnificent building began, which proceeded at an impressive speed. Rough works lasted until June 1894, and it was finally completed and equipped in 1896.
The palace chapel is dedicated to the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius.
Years of destruction: during the Second World War, the Patriarch’s Palace was completely looted, and after the liberation, secular institutions were located here, along with the residence of the Bishop of Srem.
Years of restoration: after His Grace the Bishop of Srem Mr. Vasilije managed to move the Archive of Vojvodina from a large part of the palace, its restoration began, which continues today.
Architecture: The Patriarchate was built in the “style of Italian palaces”, on the eastern side of Branko Radičević Square, north of the Cathedral Church of Saint Nicholas. It has the base of the Cyrillic letter „Š”- Ш, and three equal courtyard wings, with the middle one extended for a square dimension, covered by a hemispherical dome with a lantern on top, under which the palace chapel is located. The chapel has a cruciform base, with a dome over the central part, and it was built in the neo-Byzantine style, based on the motifs of the ancient Eastern Orthodox spirituality, the church of St. Sophia in Constantinople.
The iconostasis and painting of the chapel: in pendants, under the dome, in 1896, Uroš Predić executed the figures of the Evangelist, in the altar apse the Holy Trinity, while he filled the lunette on the west wall with a beautiful, “intimate” depiction of the Last Supper. On a simple, partly gilded iconostasis, with a protruding middle part, Saint Archdeacon Stephen, the Mother of God with Christ, on the imperial doors the scene of the Annunciation, then Jesus Christ and the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius are represented. Above the imperial doors is the Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, and on the archbishop’s throne, the first Serbian enlightener, Saint Sava.
Treasury: with the decision of the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church and the blessing of the Bishop of Srem, Mr. Vasilije, the Treasury of the Museum of the Serbian Orthodox Church was established in Sremski Karlovci, which was symbolically opened in 1998, in the presence of Serbian Patriarch Pavle and other members of the Holy Synod of Bishops. Artistic and religious objects, which are displayed in seven museum rooms, come from the Diocese of Srem, Dalmacija, Slavonija, Osijek, and Baranja.
Hall: the ceremonial hall, on the first floor, in which the patriarch received visitors in front of the throne covered with a luxurious canopy of red, gold-embroidered velvet, is located on the first floor, above the entrance hall itself. Two white fireplaces were installed on the eastern wall of this spacious hall, above which large mirrors were placed, while around the throne, there were busts of the two meritorious heads of the Karlovac Metropolitanate, Patriarch Georgi je(Branković) and Metropolitan Stefan (Stratimirović), works by Đorđe Jovanović.
