Novo Hopovo Monastery
Novo Hopovo Monastery (virtual tour of Fruška Gora monasteries)
Year of construction: oral testimony says that Saint Bishop Maxim laid the foundation for the Novi Hopovo monastery between 1496 and 1502.
Founder / benefactor: despot Đorđe, later bishop Maksim Branković.
The church is dedicated to: Transfer of the relics of Saint Nikolaj.
Years of destruction: in the Austro-Turkish wars at the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century, the Novo Hopovo monastery was repeatedly burned and looted, the last time in 1716 by the Turks; In 1941, it was mined by the Ustaša.
Years of renovation: 1718–1758, several renovations in the 19th century, from 1953 to 1960, 1989, 2000 and 2006.
Architecture: a church built in the Moravian style with a unique solution – on a strong cube base, a tambour cube is placed with a frieze of free-standing decorative columns. It was applied for the first time in Hopovo, and then it served as a model for the construction of other sacred buildings in Srem. Accommodations built in baroque style.
Iconostasis: painted by Teodor Dimitrijević Kračun, made (cut) by Paul and Anton Rezner.
Painting / frescoes: painted at the beginning of the 17th century, the painting of the nave and altar is attributed to Svetogorje artists, while the frescoes in the chancel were created in 1654 and were done by another hand.
Treasury: since 1941, the Novo Hopovo monastery has not had its own treasury; after looting and destruction by NDH soldiers, part of the movable treasure was returned and is in the Museum of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Belgrade.
Holy relics in the monastery: the relics of Saint Theodore Tiron are kept here. Saint Theodore Tiron died in the persecutions of emperors Maximian and Maximinus in 306.
