Velika Remeta Monastery

Velika Remeta Monastery (Virtual tour of Fruška Gora monasteries)

Time of construction: according to testimony, the end of the 13th or the very beginning of the 15th century, the first reliable mention is from 1543, in the firman of Sultan Suleiman II.

Founder: according to legend, Serbian king Dragutin.

The church is dedicated to Saint Demetrius (October 26/November 8).

Years of destruction: in 1716, it was burned by the Turks during their retreat from Srem; in the Second World War, the monastery of Velika Remeta was badly damaged, as the iconostasis was burned, part of the church was demolished and the quarters were damaged.

Years of restoration: 1722–1765, 1850, 1898–1901, 1951, 1959 and 1982. The comprehensive restoration of this monastic family was carried out under the direction of His Grace the Bishop of Srem Mr. Vasilije.

Architecture: it was originally built in the style of the “Raška school”, but extensive construction works took place in 1733-1753. made the church a completely baroque building.

Iconostasis: probably from 1739; from the partially burned iconostasis, a small number of icons were saved and taken to Zagreb, from where they were returned to the Serbian Orthodox Church after the Second World War; a new, modern iconostasis was installed in the restored temple.

Painting/frescoes: 1568; conservation and restoration of fresco fragments was completed in 1982.

Treasury: Stolen and destroyed in World War II

Today: the monastery complex consists of a church and multi-story lodgings that close the monastery gate on all four sides. The monastery of Velika Remeta can be visited on the website of the portal of our Diocese, if you visit the virtual tour of Fruška Gora monasteries.

Larger councils are held on St. John’s Day (July 7), The Assumption of the Mother of God (August 28), Mitrovdan (November 8) and on the Second Sunday of the Easter fast.
