Manđelos Monastery
The monastery of St. Basil of Ostrog was founded near the village of Manđelos, on a stretch better known as Jorgovanište. A local legend says that the ancient Romans used the spring here to supply Sirmium with clean water. Centuries later, the Turks built a spa with healing mud at that place, as evidenced by the remains of Muslim monuments made of stone. According to another legend, Venerable Mother Angelina watered her horses on Vranjaš, while traveling from Krušedol towards Berkasovo. Apparently, it was one of the few springs that were not infected during the “plague epidemic” (probably referring to cholera) from 1738 to 1741. This is probably why it became the object of religious sentiments and was also associated with Saints Saints Unmercenaries and Miracle Workers Cosmas and Damian.
Foundation of the monastery and construction of the temple
In 2008, with the blessing of the Bishop of Srem, Mr. Vasilije (Vadić), it was decided to build a monastery above the Vranjaš spring. The conceptual solution was adopted in 2010, so that the construction works would start in 2011, when the underfloor heating was also done, under the supervision of Archpriest Josimović. The founders of the temple of St. Basil of Ostrog are Milan and Senka Milanković from Brodac (Republika Srpska). Because of their truly inspiring endeavor, at the suggestion of the Bishop of Srem, Mr. Vasilije, the Holy Synod of Bishops awarded them the Order of Saint Sava. On the site of today’s monastery, their thirteen-year-old daughter Milena passed away, becoming its founder in such a painful and tragic way.
The temple was built of wood and its walls and iconostasis were painted by Borislav Živković. The rich wood carving on the linden iconostasis partition was executed by Dragan Šaponja from Kolut. It was consecrated in 2014 by the Bishop of Srem, Mr. Vasilije, on the feast of Saint Basil of Ostrog. This place of worship has no holy relics and no artistic antiquities. The newly built dormitory contains monastic cells, bishop’s suite, dining room, kitchen and boiler room.
