Krušedol Monastery
Krušedol Monastery (virtual tour of Fruška Gora monasteries)
Time of construction: Krušedol monastery was built by Saint Metropolitan Maxim, former despot Đorđe Branković, together with his mother Angelina, sometime between 1509 and 1516.
The church is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the glory of this shrine is actually the Holy Mother Angelina.
Years of destruction: On August 5, 1716, the Turkish army burned Krušedol and Velika Remeta to the ground.
Years of restoration: the church was restored in 1697, the monastic family was restored during the time of Patriarch Arsenije III, then from 1721 to 1726 and during the 20th century.
Architecture: the church follows the tradition of Moravian architecture, but was later baroqueized, so the bell tower, west stone portal, stone decorations around the windows and the porch in front of the entrance to the church were made in baroque style.
Iconostasis: painted during four periods, from the 16th to the 19th century.
Paintings/frescoes: from the 16th and 18th centuries, except for the western facade, which was painted in the 17th century.
Treasury: before World War II, it was the richest on Fruška Gora, and now this treasure is mostly located in the Museum of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Patrijašija in Belgrade.
Holy relics: parts of the relics of the Holy Despots Branković, which were preserved after the Turkish destruction and burning of Krušedol in 1716.
Today: the complex consists of a church, lodgings on all four sides and economic buildings. The monastery is surrounded by a spacious park.
